I am writing web apps for last 5 years, sometime a product manager is not even aware of all features of a product. So I think, the most important is, a PM must use the product as a user & client, and feel what else he wish should be there and what should be not like this.

Getting ideas from relatively younger people is sometime very fruitful, they see the product with a new dimension. (though it depends on product domain sometime, in some domains the youngers might not come up with great ideas).

PM should have good relations/talks with developers, as they write the product line-by-line, they exactly know what the domain is and to what dimension its evolution will (or may) be promising.

Market Research techniques are tools that are needed for product managers. There are a variety of techniques that can be used for different purposes. This would assist with building business cases (to understand market opportunity) to more day-to-day – uses like getting to more detailed level business requirements (I’ve used Ishikawa diagrams to get to identify opportunities). I’ve been lucky enough to work with managers who are good at survey techniques and asking clear actionable survey questions is is definitely a skill.

I’m glad you mentioned this. I don’t think anyone else has. I’ve heard of Ishikawa diagrams but never used them. Would you be interested in writing a guest post on that topic (or Market Research in general)?

Sure, I almost did something for Product Camp Atlanta, but didn’t get my act together in time 🙂 I can draft something up and let me know what you think. It can be about techniques I’ve used as Product Manager to conduct research.

The top skills for a product manager depend very much on the company culture, although I believe that it shouldn’t be like that.

From my perspective, to be a good PM (no matter where you are working), one should:
    – have the capacity to listen beyond the words (and understand the real situation that is explained)
    – have marketing knowledge (perfect understanding of the market s/he is working on – current situation and what may happen on a short&long term, your market share, basic understanding of the competition)
    – customer vision (which are your customers, what reasons have they had when choosing your product, which are the competition’s customer, which is there profile, etc)
    – understand the technology (what technology do you use and which are the rational benefits for using it, are there any other available technology that you could use?)
    – capacity to talk to different audiences (from the high level discussion with the top management to very in-deep discussion with customer care)
    – capacity to create medium and long term strategy
    – capacity to show good self-esteem, even if you don’t have it at that moment
    – no shown fear for following the procedures
    – enthusiasm and humor spirit
    – and the basics for most of the office jobs: analytical thinking, logical thinking…

For me, a PM is a person is not the expert in any of the above points, but can easily understand them

This has left me a lot to think about, because I just recently “fell” into a track for product management. I was surprised to find out that the resources for learning product management skills seem spread few and far between.

The closest I was able to find was this blog post: Quetiapine buy Quetiapine . It’s for new ‘requirements analysts’, which I assumed to be some form of business analyst. Either way, it provided a good starting point for opening yourself up to learning new things.

Product Mgrs need to know these things:
    – domain knowledge of their products. If your product is video or mobile or e-commerce, you need to go out and take a class or read about the field and the prominent players, products and challenges
    – some project management skills always help, such as requirements gathering, facilitation, writing
    – knowing some process tools like kan ban apps or basecamp, etc – brainstorming tools like mindmaps
    – some firms require product managers to work w/ designers and developers using tools like iRise or Axure for prototyping their ideas first
    – User testing – understanding how to work w the users/clients to better grasp their needs and then validate it.
    – knowledge of various development processes such as waterfall vs rup/iterative vs agile and how the product role shifts in each paradigm and what is expected of the product mgr to make sure each launch is a success.

Good list: domain knowledge, project management skills, process understanding/tools, ability to work with designers/testers and development methodologies.

What about any business skills, marketing or communication skills?

I think one important skill for a product manager that is often overlooked is the ability to “lead by influence.” In most cases, the people you need to bring your product to market do not report to you or your department. Most importantly the development team (Software and/or hardware), internal and external support folks, project managers, marketing (Trade shows / collateral) and tech pubs (Users manuals, etc). The ability to rally the team, keep them steered in the right direction, manage priorities they receive from people they do report to is a skill they don’t teach in college. The ability to be firm in driving a team of professionals that you have no direct reporting control over, is a tough skill to learn, but crucial to being a successful product manager.

Knowing the basics of the technology that your development team uses is a key. If your ‘vision’ is not possible with your technology stack you need to get a vision that fits that. Not to mention that being a bit technical will allow you to engage in deeper conversations with your development team and know when the wool is being pulled over your eyes on timeframes and the like. You don’t need to be able to write the aopplication but a basic know how or at least what’s possible goes a long way toward getting your vision realized.

In my org. Project Managment skills are an absolute must has often time we are driving aspects of the projects or smaller offshoots to address bugs after production.

Those are a few hard skills that i can think of. There are many soft skills like communication and negoigation that come in to play.

    1. Saeed

      Chris

So just to summarize, the two skills you’re talking about are:

      – understanding the technology behind the product
      – project management skills

Both are useful, the first definitely. WRT to the second, *some* project management skills are useful, but hopefully your company doesn’t make you a project manager (with a title that say “Product Manager”). I’ve seen that happen.

I think the most important skill is communicating with customers. Being able to understand how they use the product and what they need is crucial. I think this gets ignored way too often in product development. We have a general idea for what the customer needs but we don’t understand the specifics well enough to create effective features.

    1. Saeed

Communication is definitely an important skill. But digging deeper, are there any specific hard skills that people must have beyond good communication?

i.e. things they should or could go out an learn about?
