With ever increasing frequency, we hear of some site or system getting hacked. Whether it’s Google, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page , the Nasdaq, the Advanced Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University, nuclear and industrial facilities, or supporters of Wikileaks attacking Paypal, these are all examples of a new reality that we need to understand and address.
As we move more and more to a fully interconnected, online global society, there is immense opportunity for governments, corporations and (of course) criminals to exploit the data and systems that are “on the Net” or “in the Cloud”, and of course behind even (supposedly) protective firewalls . And as the examples above indicate, it’s happening today.
So here are some questions to get the discussion going:
- Given this new reality, what priority are companies, and in particular is Product Management in those companies placing on ensuring that systems, applications and data are as secure as possible?
- Is it business as usual, focusing on features and functionality, or is there an increased focus on security?
- Do products companies need to have Product Management (and Engineering) specialists in security and intrusion prevention, to ensure their products and networked services are secure?
- Is there a need for a new role in companies, CSO – Chief Security Officer — that is responsible for all aspects of cybersecurity?
Answer any of these questions in the comments section below. I’d love to hear from you.
